More about Business Intelligence training

What is business intelligence?

Business Intelligence (BI) is the term used to describe how organisations use a range of different data sources to inform business decisions.

Business Intelligence plays an important role in how businesses understand their employees and customers, as well as efficiency in internal processes, strategy and decision making.

Data is at the heart of business intelligence, with a range of data skills required to be successful in this field.

Businesses often gather a vast amount of data, and it’s the role of business intelligence to make this data easy to act upon and digest for those across a business.

What roles are there in business intelligence?

The most common role in business intelligence is Business Intelligence Analyst. This role acts as a dedicated resource for implementing an intelligence strategy that supports the rest of the business.

However, some elements of the Business Analyst role can often be taken by other positions, such as a Data Analyst, or general Data Manager. Business Intelligence Analyst often share a similar skill set to other data professionals, needing to understand data analysis, data warehousing and visualisation, as well as programming skills such as SQL or Python.

Soft, or human, skills, such as communication and stakeholder management are also playing an increasingly important role in the data pipeline, with data professionals required to share findings with other areas of the business.

What role does business intelligence play in decision making?

Having a dedicated resource for business intelligence can be invaluable for an organisation. This can lead to smarter and faster decision making, which in-turn results in better customer experiences and satisfaction.

It’s the role of a business intelligence analyst to support a business in understanding it’s customers and then turning these insights into solutions.

This is why it’s important for data professionals to be good communicators. They need to be able to scale down vast data and insights into outcomes that those outside of data can interpret and understand.

A good business intelligence analyst is not only comfortable in working with masses of data, but also presenting findings and working closely with other stakeholders.
