After taking a BSc. Hons degree in Biological Sciences and Biotechnology at Birmingham, Dr MacGregor then proceeded to receive a PhD. in Microbial Genetics from the University of Glasgow. He took postdoctoral research and teaching positions at the University of Washington in Seattle and the University of Leeds. Throughout this period, he was heavily involved in introducing computer systems into academic departments for research and teaching purposes.
