What is Robotic Process Automation (RPA)?

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the use of software to carry out repetitive, mundane administrative tasks that would otherwise be carried out by humans.

While the pre-cursors to RPA (macros, screen scrapers, automated test scripts etc.) have been around for many years and RPA itself has been around for a while, it is now gaining increasing prominence. This is because organisations have begun to appreciate that RPA offers significantly improved productivity without the need to re-engineer business processes or disturb existing systems and applications.

This is in stark contrast to more traditional approaches to increased automation such as Business
Process Modelling Software (BPMS) or Enterprise Application Integration (EAI).
