Overview
Many new trainers are expected to deliver learning with limited preparation or formal development. Effective training involves more than sharing information. It means creating learning experiences that engage learners, build capability and support performance in the workplace.
The TAP® Training Delivery Skills for New Trainers course is a practical five-day programme designed to help new and early-career trainers develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to plan, structure and deliver effective training. You will explore how people learn, how to create engaging learning experiences and how to apply the TAP® methodology to structure successful training sessions.
You will develop your training delivery style, practise questioning and facilitation techniques, and learn how to create measurable learning objectives, assessments and activities that support learner success. You will also explore how factors such as cognitive load, motivation, memory and inclusion influence the learning experience.
Throughout the programme, you will design, develop and deliver a training session on a topic of your choice. Coaching, practice and feedback will help you apply the TAP® Training Delivery guidelines and identify opportunities to improve your approach.
By the end of the course, you will have a practical foundation for planning and delivering structured, engaging training that supports learning and workplace performance.

Outline
The five-day programme combines training principles, practical exercises, session planning, coaching and delivery practice. You will build your skills progressively, moving from understanding how people learn to preparing and delivering your own training session.
Getting started: preparation
Before attending, identify your personal learning goals and brainstorm a suitable topic for your assessed training session. This will help you connect the programme content to your role and give you a focus for practising the techniques you learn.
Day 1: Understanding how people learn
Training and learning fundamentals
Explore the differences between training and presenting and consider the role of the trainer in creating effective learning experiences. You will examine learner-centred learning principles and how trainers can support learners to engage with and apply new information.
Factors affecting learning
Understand the factors that influence how people learn and retain information. Topics include:
- Cognitive load and memory.
- Learner emotions and motivation.
- The AGES model.
- The Learning Cycle.
- Learning preferences and inclusion.
You will consider how these factors can influence the design and delivery of training, and how to create learning experiences that support participation and understanding.
Creating a positive learning climate
Explore how to establish the conditions for effective learning. You will consider how to build safety and trust, support learner participation and create an environment where people can engage with the session.
You will also explore how to deliver training with confidence, credibility and enthusiasm, and how your approach can influence the learner experience.
Day 2: Structuring effective training
The TAP® structure methodology
Learn why training structure matters and how the TAP® methodology can help you organise an effective learning session. You will explore the Introduction, Learning and Review model and consider how to structure sessions to support participation and retention.
You will begin applying the structure to your own training topic, considering how to guide learners through the session and reinforce key learning points.
Learning objectives and assessment
Develop the skills needed to define clear learning outcomes and assess whether they have been achieved. Topics include:
- Writing measurable learning objectives.
- Designing valid assessments.
- Aligning objectives and testing.
You will consider how learning objectives, training activities and assessments work together to create a coherent session. These principles will help you plan training with a clear purpose and a way to check learner understanding.
Days 3 and 4: Encouraging participation and session preparation
Using questions in training
Explore how questioning can encourage participation, help learners think through ideas and check understanding. You will consider the benefits of questioning and practise using open and guided questions to support discussion and learner thinking.
Question techniques
Develop your practical questioning skills by exploring four techniques:
- Relay.
- Overhead.
- Pose, Pause, Person (PPP).
- Reflect and Reverse.
You will consider how to use these techniques to involve learners, encourage contributions and make training more interactive.
Session preparation and coaching
Continue developing your assessed training session with individual coaching and feedback. You will have opportunities to rehearse, practise and refine your approach before delivery.
This preparation will help you review your session structure, consider how you will encourage participation and build confidence in applying the TAP® Training Delivery guidelines.
Day 5: Training delivery showcase
Delivery of training sessions
Deliver your practical training session, applying the TAP® style and structure guidelines. You will demonstrate the training delivery techniques developed throughout the programme and put your session plan into practice.
Feedback and reflection
Receive trainer assessment and feedback on your delivery. Reflect on your strengths and identify opportunities to develop your skills further.
You will use this reflection to consider how you can improve your training practice and apply your learning in the workplace.
Course close and next steps
Create a personal action plan to support your continued development. Consider how to apply your learning in your role, explore continuing professional development opportunities and review the requirements for TAP® accreditation and the digital badge.
Exams and assessments
Assessment focuses on the practical application of training delivery skills. Throughout the programme, you will:
- Work on a practical training project.
- Deliver a training session and receive feedback against the TAP® guidelines.
- Reflect on your performance and identify development actions.
- Complete the practical requirements for TAP® Training Delivery Skills accreditation.

Hands-on learning
Practical application is central to the TAP® Training Delivery Skills for New Trainers course. You will develop a training session on a topic of your choice and apply the programme content as your skills progress.
You will practise creating a positive learning environment, structuring a session, writing measurable objectives and aligning assessments with learning outcomes. You will also explore how to use questioning techniques, select appropriate training aids and encourage learner participation.
Across the programme, coaching, rehearsal and feedback will help you prepare for delivery. You will then deliver your practical training session, reflect on your performance and identify actions to continue developing your skills.
