This three-day, instructor-led course is designed for students who wish to develop and maintain SQL Server databases. It will also be of use to individuals who administer applications that deliver content from SQL Server databases.



Prerequisites

In addition to their professional experience, students who attend this training should already have the following technical knowledge:

Essential:

  • Basic knowledge of the Microsoft Windows operating system and its core functionality.
  • Working knowledge of Transact-SQL (equivalent knowledge to QATSQL and QATSQLPLUS).

Nice to have:

  • Working knowledge of relational databases.
  • Some experience with database design.

Course outline

Introduction to SQL Development

  • This module introduces the core concepts of database development and explains the basics of how databases are created.

Designing and Implementing tables

  • This module explains how tables are designed, including processes such as normalisation, data types, and schemas, before moving on to the process of creating tables.

Advanced table design

  • This module explores some advanced table designs, such as partitioned, compressed, and temporal tables.

Constraints

  • This module covers the use of constraints such as primary key, foreign key, unique, and default to enforce data integrity.

Indexes

  • This module begins with an explanation of how SQL accesses data before explaining clustered, nonclustered, and columnstore indexes are created and how they can improve performance.

Views

  • This module explains the purpose of views within a database and how they are created and maintained. At the end, a short section discusses performance considerations.

Stored procedures

  • This module explains the purpose of stored procedures and the various types a developer can create, including the use of error handling.

User defined functions

  • This module introduces user defined functions, explains how they are created, and how they compare to views and procedures.

Triggers

  • The final module looks at the use of DML triggers within a database, including AFTER and INSTEAD OF triggers.

Exams and assessments

There are no formal exams included in this course. Participants will complete interactive labs and knowledge checks to reinforce learning outcomes.

How can I create an account on myQA.com?

If you have been booked onto a course by your company, you will receive a confirmation email. From this email, select "Sign into myQA" and you will be taken to the "Create account" page. Complete all of the details and select "Create account".

If you have the booking number you can also go here and select the "I have a booking number" option. Enter the booking reference and your surname. If the details match, you will be taken to the "Create account" page from where you can enter your details and confirm your account.

How do QA’s virtual classroom courses work?
