What's the difference between ITIL® 4 and ITIL® (Version 5)?
Get up to speed on the important changes from ITIL 4 to ITIL 5, the latest version of the world’s most recognised framework for service management.
ITIL 5 explained
ITIL 5 has been developed to address the new realities of the digital landscape. Organisations today must operate faster, smarter and more flexibly, especially with AI transforming how work gets done.
There has long been a call for the IT element of IT service management to be dropped as ITIL is for Everyone. The new ITIL 5 courses recognise this and are aimed at every business utilising digital services.
Why ITIL 5 is needed:
-
Digital-first, product-centric enterprises require updated guidance. Previous versions focused mainly on services; modern organisations manage integrated products and services.
-
AI and automation are reshaping operations. ITIL 5 provides an AI-native approach that helps organisations adapt and innovate confidently.
-
Businesses need models that support agility and rapid change. ITIL 5 evolves to ensure adaptive, outcome-focused practices aligned with real-world needs.
-
Organisations must continually demonstrate measurable value. The new framework strengthens the link between people, practices, and technology to drive sustainable business results.

Key ITIL 5 innovations
ITIL 5 adopts clearer, more adaptable models that reflect real-world operations.
ITIL 5 is built to work naturally with modern technologies such as AI, DevOps and agile, making it easier for organisations to integrate automation and intelligent workflows.
ITIL 5 explicitly includes products alongside services, allowing organisations to manage products and services holistically in a digital environment.
The framework enhances visibility and collaboration across all stakeholders in the digital ecosystem.
It retains valuable guidance from ITIL v3 and ITIL 4, protecting existing investments in training, certifications and organisational adoption.
ITIL 5 certification
There will be nine core courses in the new ITIL5 qualification model plus one extension module.
These courses focus on those specified elements. Managing and implementing a service, managing and implementing products, the customer and user experience, and the strategy supporting the service, products or experience.
QA now offer the ITIL 5 Foundation Certificate as an entry point to the full ITIL 5 suite, with more courses coming soon.
