PRINCE2 FAQs
What is PRINCE2?
PRINCE2 stands for "Projects IN Controlled Environments and is a widely recognised project management framework and methodology. It was developed by the UK government in the late 1980s and has since become a global standard for managing projects effectively. PRINCE2 provides a structured and adaptable approach to managing projects of various sizes and complexities.
What certifications are included in PRINCE2?
Here’s the full list of PRINCE2 certifications and some of the most commonly asked questions about PRINCE2 qualifications and exams.
PRINCE2 Foundation
The Foundation level is the first step to getting a PRINCE2 qualification and is the logical first step for anyone who has no prior knowledge of PRINCE2 or project management qualifications.
There are no pre-requisites for taking this course. This level is suitable for all levels of professionals and will focus on the theoretical knowledge of how to plan, manage and deliver projects. The foundation certificate is a prerequisite for the Practitioner certification.
PRINCE2® Practitioner
The practitioner level extends on the knowledge from the foundation level and focuses on applying and tailoring the PRINCE2 method to a range of different project environments and scenarios.
PRINCE2® Agile Foundation and Practitioner
The PRINCE2 Agile method provides the knowledge needed to be able to blend agile ways of working within the defined governance structure of PRINCE2.
The foundation level provides the fundamentals to help deliver agile projects by tailoring PRINCE2 management controls with a broad toolset of agile delivery techniques and frameworks, including SCRUM, Kanban and Lean Start-Up.
The Practitioner level extends the foundation knowledge and applies it to the workplace. you must hold PRINCE2 Agile Foundation or any PRINCE2 certification before attempting this level.
Why choose PRINCE2?
PRINCE2® allows organisations to demonstrate project standards through an internationally recognised certification, and to bid for corporate tenders demanding project management qualifications.
For the individual, PRINCE2® qualifications will improve your project management skills and demonstrate your expertise to employers and prospective employers.
The PRINCE2® exam format of multi-choice questions is also popular with those who prefer it to an essay-based approach.
What are the principles of PRINCE2?
PRINCE2 is based on seven key principles that underpin its approach to project management. These principles include:
- Continued business justification: projects should have a valid and compelling reason for existence and this justification should be reviewed throughout the project.
- Learn from experience: PRINCE2 encourages organisations to learn from past projects and apply these lessons to current and future endeavours.
- Defined roles and responsibilities: clear roles and responsibilities are assigned to individuals within the project team, ensuring accountability and effective decision making.
- Manage by stages: projects are divided into manageable stages, allowing for better control and flexibility in adapting to changes.
- Manage by exception: project managers are authorised to act on behalf of project stakeholders, but they should only escalate issues to higher management when they exceed predefined tolerances.
- Focus on products: PRINCE2 emphasises defining and delivering products that meet the project's objectives.
- Tailor to suit the project: the framework can be tailored to fit the specific needs and characteristics of each project.
Methodology and Processes:
PRINCE2 provides a structured approach to project management through its defined processes. These processes include starting, initiating, directing, controlling, managing product delivery, managing stage boundaries, and closing the project. Each process has a specific purpose and set of activities to ensure that the project progresses smoothly from initiation to completion.
What is a PRINCE2 qualification equivalent to?
PRINCE2 qualifications are widely recognised and respected in the project management field.
They are considered equivalent to other well-known project management certifications like the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification for agile project management.
PRINCE2 qualifications demonstrate your ability to manage projects effectively and can be a valuable addition to your professional portfolio, irrespective of your industry or sector.
How long do PRINCE2 certifications last?
All (Foundation and Practitioner) PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications will need to be renewed after 3 years.
How do I renew a PRINCE2 certification?
There are three options available for you to keep your qualifications up to date:
- Retake the same exam.
- Take an exam in same product suite.
- Collecting and logging CPD points via the MyAxelos platform.

The impact of our project management training
QA has successfully trained around a hundred people from Energis, using a mixture of closed and public courses, as part of what is now a rolling project management training programme.
The PRINCE2 training took place at Leeds, Reading and London. The PRINCE2 certification – PRINCE2 for Practitioners – was used as a goal and means of measuring both the success of the training and the resulting skills of the delegates.
NES wanted to secure the success of a growing number of complex projects. To achieve this, it engaged QA to benchmark and enhance its project capabilities using best practice to develop its people and processes.
To support the programme, QA worked with NES to develop a project handbook aligned to the APM body of knowledge. This tool, along with the ongoing improvements to the processes, gave project staff access to best practice guidance as required.
The COE team in Highways England worked closely with the Association of Project Management and leading training provider QA to define and implement a defined career path and development strategy for their project management community of over 1,100 project professionals.
This exercise helped Highways England to understand their current and future needs for project and programme leadership and highlighted the need to attract and retain project professionals by providing the developmental and professional support to build their career over the long term.
