The Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate certification is designed for developers who build the back-end services that power AI applications on Microsoft Azure. It validates your ability to deploy containerised workloads, use Azure data services for vector search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), connect services through messaging and events, and secure and monitor the result.
What is Microsoft Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate?
This certification is for developers who contribute to all phases of building AI solutions on Microsoft Azure, with a focus on back-end services and components. Candidates are expected to support the full development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and design through to deployment, security and monitoring.
Earning it shows you can build scalable, production-ready cloud applications that store and retrieve AI data, respond to events and run reliably on Azure. It replaces the Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204), which retired on 31 July 2026.
Which topics does Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate cover?
The AI-200 exam is split into four skill areas:
- Develop containerised solutions on Azure (20–25%): Azure Container Registry, Azure App Service, Azure Container Apps (including KEDA event-driven scaling) and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
- Develop AI solutions by using Azure data management services (25–30%): Azure Cosmos DB for NoSQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL with pgvector and Azure Managed Redis, including storing embeddings, vector similarity search and RAG patterns.
- Connect to and consume Azure services (20–25%): Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid and Azure Functions.
- Secure, monitor and troubleshoot Azure solutions (20–25%): Azure Key Vault, Azure App Configuration, OpenTelemetry and KQL queries.
How do I earn the Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate certification?
To earn this certification, you need to pass Exam AI-200: Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure. The exam tests your ability to build and run the back-end of AI solutions on Azure, including containerised hosting, AI-ready data services, event-driven integration, security and monitoring.
You can prepare with an official course, such as Develop AI cloud solutions on Microsoft Azure (MAI200), which covers the skills measured in the exam.
Does this certification replace AZ-204?
Yes. Microsoft retired Exam AZ-204 and the Azure Developer Associate certification on 31 July 2026, and AI-200 is the route forward for Azure developers. If you already hold the Azure Developer Associate, it remains valid until its expiry date but can no longer be renewed.
AI-200 is not a like-for-like update. It keeps core developer skills such as Azure Functions, Service Bus, Event Grid, Key Vault and Cosmos DB, adds AKS, PostgreSQL with pgvector and vector search, and no longer covers Blob Storage, Microsoft identity platform authentication or API Management.
What are the prerequisites of Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate certification?
There are no formal prerequisites. Microsoft recommends that candidates are proficient in:
- Python programming, JavaScript or C#
- Azure SDKs and third-party SDKs used in Azure
- Azure data management services and vector database
- Azure messaging and eventing
- Implementing containerised applications on Azure
- Azure monitoring and troubleshooting

It validates the practical skills that sit behind production AI applications, such as vector search, event-driven architecture and container orchestration, which are relevant across cloud development, software engineering and AI-focused roles.

What is the exam structure of Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate?
The AI-200 exam lasts 120 minutes. Questions can include multiple choice, scenario-based questions and interactive components. At the time of writing, you need a score of 700 or higher (on a scale of 1 to 1,000) to pass.
The exam is proctored and can be taken online or at a test centre. It is available in English and 12 other languages. If you don't pass, you can retake the exam after 24 hours.

Microsoft Learn also offers the official AI-200 study guide, free self-paced learning paths and an exam sandbox where you can try out the exam interface. Does Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate certification expire?
Yes. Like other Microsoft associate certifications, it is valid for one year. You can renew it for free by passing an online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn, which becomes available in the six months before your certification expires.
