AI won't replace leadership. But it will transform what great leadership looks like. See how E.ON is building AI-ready leaders as one of the UK's first adopters of QA's AI Leadership Apprenticeship Unit.

The challenge

E.ON is one of the UK's largest energy network and infrastructure operators, delivering smart, sustainable, and specialised solutions to homes, businesses, and communities.

The energy sector is undergoing significant digital transformation, with AI increasingly being used to enhance customer services, improve operational efficiency, and support smarter decision-making. E.ON recognised that its leaders needed the skills and confidence to identify opportunities, navigate risk, and help embed AI effectively and responsibly across the business.

The solution

E.ON's AI Centre of Excellence was established to coordinate AI adoption across the organisation, with leadership capability recognised as a critical enabler of that strategy. To support their ambition, E.ON partnered with QA, building on a long-standing relationship founded on shared development goals and a commitment to putting learners first. Demand for the AI Leadership Apprenticeship Units was significant, attracting almost 200 expressions of interest from across the business, demonstrating a clear appetite for AI understanding and capability.

The AI Strategy and Opportunity Apprenticeship Unit

Programme highlights:

  • Six days of instructor-led learning focused on AI opportunities, strategic alignment, governance, risk, and responsible AI adoption.
  • Hands-on experience with leading AI tools, including Microsoft Copilot, OpenAI ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, and Google Gemini.
  • Real-world applications and use cases designed to help learners apply AI within their own business areas.

Key outcomes

Through E.ON's partnership with QA, they have started to build the leadership capability required to support responsible AI adoption and long-term business transformation. The impact of the programme extended beyond the initial cohort, helping to embed AI across teams.

  • Several digital AI teams have been established, creating opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and AI innovation across the business.
  • Learners are actively supporting E.ON's broader AI strategy, using their increased awareness and understanding to champion responsible AI adoption and identify opportunities for business value creation.

Emily Ball, People Partner, E.ON, who took part in the programme, said:

"Before the course, AI felt like a fast-moving topic that was hard to pin down. The apprenticeship unit made it feel practical and accessible, giving me the confidence to explore how it can support my work, my team, and the way we make decisions, without losing the human judgement that good leadership depends on."

Kara Flook, Emerging Technology Lead, E.ON, shared:

"The programme's modules provide a strong framework for equipping business leaders with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to navigate AI-driven change, make informed decisions, and lead responsible adoption within their teams. As we continue to deliver against our AI strategy, leadership capability will be a critical enabler in helping us realise the full potential of AI across the organisation."

Conclusion

E.ON's first AI Leadership Apprenticeship Unit cohort marks an important step in its wider AI transformation journey. By investing in leadership capability today, E.ON is helping ensure that AI adoption is guided by informed decision-making, responsible governance, and strong human judgement.

Working alongside QA, E.ON is developing leaders who can identify opportunities, navigate complexity, and turn AI potential into meaningful business value, creating the foundations for long-term transformation across the organisation.
