Overview
Experienced trainers often develop their delivery skills through practice rather than a formal training methodology. Effective training, however, involves more than confidence and subject expertise. It requires a structured approach that creates engaging learning experiences, supports retention and helps learners apply their knowledge in the workplace.
The TAP® Training Delivery Skills Experienced Trainers course is a practical three-day programme designed to help experienced trainers refine and formalise their training practice. You will explore the principles that influence learning, strengthen your delivery techniques and develop a more structured, learner-centred approach to training design and delivery.
Using the TAP® Training Delivery guidelines, you will review your existing skills and apply practical tools and techniques to improve your sessions. Topics include managing learning load, structuring training, writing measurable learning objectives, aligning assessments and using questioning to encourage participation.
Throughout the programme, you will develop a practical training project, receiving coaching and feedback as you prepare and deliver a session on a topic of your choice.
By the end of the course, you will be better equipped to plan and deliver structured, engaging training that supports learning and workplace performance.
Prerequisites
You should have at least six months of training delivery experience.
Before attending, you should also:
- Identify a potential workplace topic for your assessed training session.
- Be prepared to review your current practice and apply feedback to develop your skills.

It is particularly relevant to trainers who already deliver learning and want to strengthen their practice through a recognised methodology, structured session planning and practical feedback.

Outline
Across three days, you will review the principles behind effective learning, refine your training delivery techniques and apply the TAP® methodology to your own training session. Practical activities, coaching and feedback help you connect the course content to your existing experience.
Getting started: preparation
Before attending, identify a workplace topic that you can use for your assessed training session. This provides a practical focus for developing your session plan, applying the TAP® guidelines and demonstrating your training delivery skills.
Day 1: Building the foundations
Factors affecting learning
Explore how learning happens and the factors that influence learning and retention. You will consider how to manage learning load, examine the AGES model and explore ways to create learner-centred experiences.
This session helps you reflect on how your training approach can support learners to engage with information and retain key learning points.
Training session structure
Review the TAP® structure methodology and how it can help you create effective learning sessions. You will explore ways to structure training for engagement, retention and application, and consider how to plan learning activities that support your intended outcomes.
You will apply these principles to your own training session, reviewing its structure and considering how each part contributes to the learning experience.
Learning objectives and assessments
Strengthen your approach to defining and assessing learning outcomes. Topics include:
- Writing measurable learning objectives.
- Applying behaviour, standard and condition when developing objectives.
- Designing effective assessments.
- Aligning objectives with learning activities.
You will consider how clear objectives and appropriate assessments help establish what learners should achieve and how their progress can be assessed.
Day 2: Developing delivery skills
Training delivery style
Review the behaviours and techniques that support effective training delivery. You will explore how to create a positive learning climate, demonstrate confidence, credibility and enthusiasm, and use trainer behaviours that support learning.
You will also consider how to manage learner engagement and adapt your delivery to encourage participation throughout a session.
Questioning
Develop your use of questioning to make training more interactive and responsive to learners. You will explore how to use questions to:
- Increase learner participation.
- Check understanding.
- Facilitate discussion.
- Respond constructively to learner contributions.
You will consider how effective questioning can help trainers check progress, encourage learners to contribute and respond to the needs of the group.
Session preparation and coaching
Continue developing your practical training project with individual coaching and feedback. You will rehearse and practise your session, refine your approach and complete final preparations for delivery.
This provides an opportunity to review your training plan, strengthen your delivery techniques and identify areas to focus on during your assessed session.
Day 3: Training delivery showcase
Delivery of training sessions
Deliver your practical training session, applying the TAP® style and structure guidelines. You will demonstrate training delivery techniques developed throughout the programme and put your revised session plan into practice.
Feedback and reflection
Receive trainer assessment and feedback on your delivery. Reflect on your strengths and identify opportunities for further development.
This process helps you consider how effectively you applied the TAP® guidelines and where you can continue to refine your professional practice.
Course close and next steps
Create a personal action plan to support your continued development. Consider how to apply your learning in the workplace, identify continuing professional development opportunities and review the requirements for TAP® accreditation and the digital badge.
