Overview:

A practical role installing cutting-edge technology, networking, control and audio-visual systems in prestige domestic residences and small to medium sized businesses.

Main responsibilities:

  • The role of an installation technician is a varied one because no two projects are ever identical in the field of “Custom Installation”. At its most basic, a project may be to install integrated speaker systems with wireless App based control. This may require running cables, cutting apertures in ceilings, terminating, connecting and testing apparatus.
  • A more sophisticated system may be to centrally locate and distribute entertainment media to multiple rooms around the home over wired or wireless networks.
  • Even more sophistication comes from programming control systems to automate lighting, security, environmental, TV, audio, blinds and other systems to deliver so-called “smart-home” solutions.
  • In this role, the apprentice will be expected to support and learn from a senior installation technician. The applicant should be able to demonstrate competency already with hands-on tasks and will learn many new skills and technologies.
  • Much time will be spent out of the office on site at customer projects and the successful applicant will quickly be expected to be able to perform simple tasks unassisted.
  • In time, you will advance to more technical tasks and be expected to offer design suggestions to build customer systems as well as be able to write proposal documents to win new business.
  • Technical support is an inevitable consequence of supplying and installing such systems and you will learn not just the technical skills but, just as importantly, the people skills required to handle (often demanding) customer support issues.

This is a practical role that involves both repeatable tasks but, since no two projectsare the same, each oneyields opportunities to develop new skills.

Personal qualities:

  • It is essential that the person has a “can do” attitude to solving problems and brings attention to detail, initiative and a quality approach to their work.
  • The ability to communicate with clients and colleagues is also essential and professionalism is paramount at all times.

Desired qualifications:

  • 5 GCSE’s, grades A*-C/9-4 or equivalent (including English Language and Maths)

Nonspecific, but it is likely that the successful person will have enjoyed some success in IT, Maths, and DT.

Working week:

Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 5:30pm - 42.5 hours per week.

Future prospects:

The “custom installation” business is a thriving one where skilled individual can command good salaries and good employment prospects.

For the entrepreneurially minded there are also opportunities to start an independent operation.

The technology is fast-changing and so new opportunities present themselves every day.

There is a trade body (CEDIA) who provide qualification progression

Things to consider:

  • The ethos of the company is to reward staff who contribute to successful business. That means satisfied customer outcomes with profitable transactions. There is therefore the opportunity to increase earnings with bonus payments for such contributions
  • There will sometimes be early morning starts and late finishes depending on where the projects are.
  • Flexibility is therefore required.
