This course is an advanced Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) course that focuses on customizing ALM. The course delves into the Open Test Architecture (OTA) library to teach the students not only how to navigate and understand the library to help customize ALM, but also illustrates many real world examples about how to extend the capabilities of ALM, limited only by your knowledge of VB Scripting. Another area that is covered is how to integrate ALM with external third-party applications.

The hands-on labs for this course use version 11.5 of the software.


Working knowledge of the following:

  • Application Lifecycle Management/Quality Center 11.x Essentials or equivalent experience.
  • VB Scripting experience

Module 3: Workflow Events, Objects, and Properties

  • Define event functions

  • Access objects and properties in workflow scripts

Module 4: Best Practices and Examples for Writing Workflow Scripts

  • Apply general VBScript tips and best practices
  • Apply ALM workflow tips and best practices
  • Customize modules and access objects within modules
  • Customize modules and access objects using the TDConnection object
  • Use error handling

Module 5: Introduction to Advanced Scripting

  • Define Open Test Architecture (OTA)
  • View advanced scripting with OTA
  • Define uses of the OTA library

Day Two

Module 6: Scripting for Utilities

  • Identify OTA utilities
  • View applications with OTA utilities
  • Apply scripting with OTA utilities to the following areas:Alerts
  • Attachments
  • Dependencies
  • Filters and Lists
  • Version Control
  • Extended Storage

Module 7: Using the OTA COM Type Library

  • Define Component Object Model (COM)
  • Work with the OTA COM type library
  • Define type libraries objects such as:
  • Coclasses
  • Interfaces
  • Enums
  • Define relations between coclasses, interfaces, and enums

Module 8: Using the OTA COM Type Library in an External Application

  • Use the OTA type library in an external application
  • Define common interfaces, object classes, and methods to manipulate ALM from a custom application
  • Execute custom application requirements

Module 9: ALM Integration with Third-Party Applications

  • Integrate ALM with Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for single sign-on (SSO)
  • Use the ALM Synchronizer to integrate with external tools, such as Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS)
  • Create custom Synchronizer service provider interfaces (SPIs)
  • Use the ALM REST application programming interfaces (APIs)
