This 2 day course introduces subject matter experts, trainers and learning facilitators to the skills required for undertaking coaching as part of a continuous improvement programme in the workplace. Aspirational coaching helps the learner to set and meet their own goals whilst developmental coaching helps to build skills and subject matter expertise. Coaching skills are a valuable component of the L&D Professional’s core skill set.

Successful completion leads to the TAP Certificate in Coaching.

Course objectives and assessment

  • Discuss a partner’s developmental learning needs, following the six-step process
  • Deliver a developmental coaching session to a partner based upon the needs analysis discussion and which meets the criteria of the Developmental Coaching Profile
  • Discuss a partner’s aspirations, following the GROW model, on an issue of their choice

Competencies delegates will develop

1. Understanding the role of a coach

  • Defining what coaching is and understanding it in context
  • Recognising the roles of the coachee, coach and manager
  • Recognising when the role of a coach would be valuable
  • Identifying why coaching records are required
  • Applying the skills of a coach

2. Analysing learner needs

  • Recognising the importance of analysing learner needs
  • Gathering all relevant information from stakeholders
  • Using a range of question types to elicit information
  • Creating a climate that is positive, open and which encourages information sharing
  • Conducting a learning needs interview professionally, applying active listening techniques throughout

3. Planning to conduct a developmental coaching session

  • Identifying the importance of planning for a coaching intervention
  • Preparing a coaching plan
  • Gathering appropriate resources to run a smooth and successful coaching session
  • Making necessary arrangements for the coaching session

4. Conducting a developmental coaching session

  • Recognising when a developmental coaching session would be valuable
  • Recognising the importance of coaching in a suitable environment
  • Identifying the importance of using a questioning approach to the session
  • Conveying the objective/s of the session to the learner
  • Using a range of question types and techniques to encourage the learner to take responsibility for their learning
  • Applying active listening techniques throughout the session
  • Managing the session to full achievement of the objective/s
  • Indicating what follow-on action would be appropriate

5. Conducting an aspirational coaching session

  • Recognising when an aspirational coaching session would be valuable
  • Recognising the importance of coaching in a conducive environment
  • Identifying the importance of using a questioning approach to the session
  • Encouraging the learner to define their own outcome
  • Using a range of question types and techniques to encourage the learner to take responsibility for their own development
  • Applying active listening techniques throughout the session
  • Indicating what follow-on action would be appropriate

6. Presenting self

  • Using positive body language to create a friendly and relaxed environment
  • Injecting enthusiasm through the use of positive language and voice modulation
  • Portraying confidence by the avoidance of distracting mannerisms and the use of voice projection

This course is an elective component of the TAP Diplomas in Learning Facilitation, and/or L&D Management.
