Our Operations/Departmental Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship is designed for senior management professionals to enhance their management and leadership practices at a higher level.

QA combines online learning, classroom training and on-the-job experience to deliver a flexible, world-class development programme geared to your success.

This programme is suited to all types of business management positions, uniquely designed to give you practical solutions to leading at a higher level.

What’s included?

On successful completion of the programme, you will gain the following qualifications:

  • Operations/Departmental Manager Level 5
  • CMI Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management
  • CMI Chartered Manager Award (eligible with 3+ years management experience)


The entry requirements for this programme are as follows:

  • Must be in a management role such as Operations Manager, Regional Manager, Divisional Manager, Departmental Manager or Specialist Manager
  • GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths at grade D or above
  • You must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level than this apprenticeship in a similar subject

What will you learn?

You will learn easy-to-implement, performance-enhancing leadership techniques including:

  • Delivering operational excellence
  • Leading through innovation and change
  • Managing and developing business relationships
  • Enhancing integrity, ethics and social responsibility

We also include market-leading profiling tools to help you enhance your management skills to a high level:

  • Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI) – your managers will learn to understand what makes them and others tick. SDI will empower your senior managers to communicate in a way that achieves results both when things are going well or when they are in conflict.
  • The Visionary Leader (by Marshall Sashkin, PhD) – enables your managers to discover their approach to leadership and gain 360 feedback from others.


During the programme you’ll be required to spend 20% of your time at work on off-the-job learning.

Our programme helps you easily fit learning around your day job with access to our online learning platform – learning can be accessed anytime, anywhere and on any device so you get high-quality content on the go.

You will complete:

  1. Four knowledge modules exploring in-depth leadership theory and fundamentals, through a combination of online learning and practical classroom workshops.
  2. On-programme assignments for the CMI diploma.
  3. A work-based portfolio and workplace project showcasing how you’ve applied the skills you’ve learnt in the workplace.
  4. An end-point assessment in the last 2-3 months of the programme – consisting of a presentation and Q&A session, an interview and a discussion relating to your CPD activity.

The modules included in this programme are:

  • Module 1: Manager to Leader
  • Module 2: Delivering Operational Excellence (3 day workshop)
  • Module 3: Fundamentals of Project Management (2 day workshop)
  • Module 4: Managing Budgets

CMI Chartered Manager Award

As part of this apprenticeship, you will automatically be eligible for Chartered Manager status.

Mapped across the existing EPA process for this qualification, you will automatically be assessed for the CMI Chartered Manager Award without any additional work required.

Automatic eligibility includes successfully passing the EPA and having a minimum of 3 years management experience. Apprentices with under 3 years experience will be able to apply for Chartered Status once this criteria has been met.
