Our Associate Project Manager Level 4 Apprenticeship empowers learners to transform into a confident and capable Project Managers, equipped with best practice knowledge and techniques.

Our programme prepares learners to plan and execute internal or customer-facing projects on time and on budget.

What’s included?

On successful completion of the programme following qualifications are gained:

  • Associate Project Manager Level 4
  • PMQ, APM

The entry requirements for this programme are as follows:

  • A Level in any subject
    • Or Level 3 qualification in a similar subject
    • Or an existing project management qualification
  • Learners must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level than this apprenticeship in a similar subject.

Job role suitability if already in employment:

To help determine whether this programme is suitable for learners, you must be able to answer “yes” to the following questions.

  • Will learners be performing project management duties as the core function of their role including; developing, implementing, monitoring and reviewing projects?
  • Will their role enable them to manage a project through a complete project life cycle? (can be a low risk internal project or suitable scale work-package)
  • Will learners be developing substantial new skills via completion and training undertaken on this apprenticeship?
  • Are they new to the role or changing job roles to support their requirement of training and development?
  • Are they involved in and actively working on Project Management duties, including:

During the programme learners will be required to spend 20% of time at work on off-the-job learning.

Our knowledge modules introduce core project management concepts, giving learners a solid foundation in project management which they are able to apply on work-based projects.

Our face-to-face training workshops and online learning develops the core set of skills learners must be able to do well to be competent in their role.

As part an apprentice’s programme they will complete:

  • Seven knowledge modules introducing project management theories and fundamentals, through a combination of online learning and practical classroom workshops.
  • A work-based portfolio showcasing how apprentices have demonstrated the skills learned in real work projects.
  • An end-point assessment in the last 2-3 months of the programme to ensure apprentices have met the learning outcomes of the programme.

To ensure all apprentices can do these skills consistently well, we’ve designed modules with the following learning outcomes:

Module 1: Principles of Project Management

(1.5 days online learning, 2 x 1 day workshops, 5 days challenge)

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of project management including:
  • The difference between project and business as usual
  • Project lifecycles
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Ethics and professionalism within projects
  • Project context and governance
  • Waterfall and Agile project management concepts
  • Gaining insight into project management methodologies and frameworks including PRINCE2®

Module 2: Concept and Business Case

(1.5 days online learning, 2 x 1 day workshops, 5 days challenge)

  • Understand the concept phase of the project lifecycle
  • Project communications and processes to integrate components of project management
  • Plan and develop a business case
  • Comparing Agile and Waterfall business case requirements
  • Write and review a business case

Module 3: Project Finances

(1.5 days online learning, 2 x 1 day workshops, 5 days challenge)

  • Financial management of projects
  • Explore estimating methods
  • Define a project budget
  • Conduct monitoring and reporting
  • Understand contractual management and procurement, including contractual agreements, legal and ethical requirements, and the procurement process

Module 4: Project Planning

(1.5 days online learning, 2 x 1 day workshops, 5 days challenge)

  • Define and plan a project
  • Develop and finalise the project scope
  • Create a project plan incorporating a project schedule
  • Understand resource requirements, planning and developing outputs, such as the resource histogram
  • Explore the differences between traditional Waterfall projects and the iterative cyclical approach used in Agile projects
  • Complete practical scheduling activities to plan a project including, creating the work breakdown structure, developing the network diagram, and identifying float, critical path and resource requirements

Module 5: Risk Management

(1.5 days online learning, 2 x 1 day workshops, 5 days challenge)

  • Explore project risk and issue management theory and application
  • Understand the risk management process and learn how to apply risk management within project environments
  • Complete risk identification, analysis, and responses
  • Plan and monitor risks and review lessons learnt
  • Comprehend the theory and application of risk and issue management within Waterfall and Agile environments
  • Identify, analyse and review risks and potential risk responses

Module 6: Project Monitoring and Quality

(1.5 days online learning, 2 x 1 day workshops, 5 days challenge)

  • Explore the management of project change, project monitoring, reporting, reviews and quality control
  • Develop knowledge of appropriate tools for progress and performance monitoring
  • Manage project quality, including the quality of deliverables
  • Understand project documentation compliance
  • Explore configuration management and quality standards

Module 7: Management and Leadership

(1.5 days online learning, 2 x 1 day workshops, 5 days challenge)

  • Understand the leadership and management skills required to put a project management plan into action
  • Enhance leadership capabilities in the workplace
  • Appreciate how to manage internal and external resources
  • Advanced communication skills including conflict management and negotiation skills
  • Conduct self-assessment and 360 feedback

Learning event 1 – consolidating project management (1 day workshop)

  • This is a team simulation consolidating the topics covered during modules 1-7.
  • A practical workshop which goes through a simulation of the project lifecycle.
  • Working in teams to gain practical exposure to running a project from start to close and handover, including lessons learnt.

Learning event 2 - PMQ preparation (2 day workshop)

  • This workshop will helps to prepare for the PMQ exam.
  • Mock questions, exam technique and best practice will be covered in the session.

Learning event 3 - PMQ exam (1/2 day workshop)

This event typically occurs directly after learning event 2, i.e. over 2.5 days

  • Following learning event 2, a three-hour PMQ written exam is sat.
