Business and IT training courses from QA


When it came to selecting and training engineers to support the communications around the most prestigious event hosted in the UK in many years, BT turned to QA to help identify and prepare this critical team.

The Challenge

As the official communications services provider for the Olympic Games 2012, BT felt it was essential to provide an exemplary service, showcasing the organisation to the millions worldwide who will tune in to watch the Games, as well as contributing to the success of the overall event.

BT knew that the strength of the service would depend on the skills of those supporting it, so they worked with QA to both help select top flight engineering staff for the event and ensure these staff were fully trained and competent to the highest levels.

To achieve these objectives and confirm the high calibre of those selected to support communications for the Games, QA delivered a twofold learning solution that would support BT’s Olympic commitments by:

  • Identifying the skills level of each of its engineers
  • Enrolling BT’s foremost engineers on the appropriate programme of training to achieve Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) accreditation

The Solution

QA’s first task was to carry out a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) to establish the current skills levels of BT’s engineers. The TNA took the form of an automated competency assessment test which engineers were asked to complete online.

The results of the TNA were analysed by one of QA’s Cisco subject matter experts to identify BT’s most skilled engineers and those candidates suitable for CCNA accreditation. Instead of simply providing a score, the detailed response analysis enabled QA to determine individuals’ specific knowledge gaps and enrol them on a range of training events, according to their needs.

Rather than enrolling all candidates on the same CCNA training, those with the most appropriate skills were taken forward and directed into one of the following routes:

  • Individuals who needed a broader understanding were enrolled on a full eight-day boot camp
  • Those who needed a refresher of the basics and a deeper understanding of the advanced concepts were given access to eLearning on the foundation modules, followed by an accelerated five-day boot camp
  • Individuals with a strong foundation attended an accelerated five-day boot camp on the advanced concepts
  • Those with a strong understanding of both the foundation and advanced concepts were invited to attend a virtual refresher session followed by a two-day revision event

Enrolling engineers on these different tiers of training ensured they only received the learning they required, rather than spending additional time covering topics below their skill level.

Its main activities are the provision of fixed-line services, broadband, mobile and TV products and services as well as networked IT services.

The Outcome

Since the beginning of the programme 231 engineers have completed the TNA, of which 159 have been put forward for training and accreditation, forming a top team to support BT’s communications services for the Olympics.

In addition, by enrolling engineers on tiered events to meet their specific needs, the programme has delivered significant savings against the cost of sending all 231 CCNA candidates on the full eight-day boot camp.

The training enabled us to establish who the top-end people were for that high-end work and get them accredited suitably. Putting people through the tiered training rather than putting everyone through a boot camp was a huge benefit. It utilised the business money more effectively by giving people the right training and getting the best return for the business.
