About this programme
Our Business Analyst Level 4 apprenticeship develops people to analyse information systems solutions and know how they can be used to improve operational efficiency for organisations. Our programme prepares people to regularly investigate and analyse solutions to ensure the right one is chosen.
Our programme is completely unique, delivered through a leading-edge, innovative approach to challenge-based learning.
It has been developed using the latest research into effective learning and practical application of skills. It provides a flexible learning journey using a blend of learning methodologies including online learning, practical exercises, video content, coaching and workshops. It enables accelerated and proficient skills development, as well as offering the opportunity for apprentices to fit learning in amongst their other priorities.
During this programme learners have the opportunity to complete the following qualifications:
- Business Analyst Level 4
- BCS Certificate in Business Analysis Practice*
- BCS Certificate in Requirements Engineering*
*Exams at an extra cost
The entry requirements for this programme are as follows:
- Business or Business related Degree (Maths, Finance, Economics etc.)
- Non Business related Degree PLUS at-least 6 months of work experience
- Existing Staff member with 2+ years of work experience
- Level 3 Qualification PLUS at-least 12 months of work experience AND a robust on-boarding plan (learner must work in the organisation for 3 months before sign up)

This Apprenticeship covers concepts on investigation and analysis of solutions, identification and evaluation of business improvement.
Business Analysts document business problems and user needs, and create solution requirements that align to best practice, and present them in a meaningful and logical way appropriate to the audience. Business Analysts manage stakeholder relationships, ensuring collaboration between business and technical stakeholders. By focusing on benefits and outcomes they ensure the right problems are solved and the right products are developed.
This is an adaption of the new apprenticeship standards model with an End Point Assessment involving a project presentation and professional discussion.

During the programme, learners will be required to spend 20% of work time committed to off-the-job learning.
The modules in our Business Analyst apprenticeship equip learners with the advanced technical skills they need for their role. Each module develops the core set of skills they must be able to do well to be competent in their role.
The programme is made up of seven modules that follow our challenge-based learning approach. They combine multiple modes of learning (live, self-paced, and practical), seamlessly delivered through a ‘blend’ of online and live learning events.
Our approach is underpinned by the latest learning theory. Learner-centric approaches (where the focus is on how people learn, rather than which technology to use) which have proved to be more effective in promoting productive learning.
The advent of new technologies has fundamentally changed the way individuals create, change, share and interact with information, and the way they interact with each other, and our programme addresses this with its blend of learning methodologies. Methods are collaborative and hands-on – and so is our programme.
Crucial to our challenge-based approach are the remote module tasks, which require learners to work with their peers, tutors, and mentors to learn and come up with a solution to a challenge. The cooperative and applied nature of this type of approach to training makes it perfect for learners of all ages.
As part of the programme, apprentices will complete:
- Seven knowledge modules teaching advanced theory and its practical application, through a combination of online learning and practical live workshops.
- A summative portfolio showcasing how the learner(s) have/has demonstrated the skills they learn in real work projects.
- Workplace project proposal with a maximum of 5000 words.
- Conduct a professional discussion to assess whether learners have successfully met the learning requirements of the programme.
The modules included in this programme are:
Module 1: Business Analysis Principles
- Ensure business change is aligned to business need;
- Plan Business Analysis activities and stakeholder engagement;
- Understand Business change and system development life cycles, including the use of appropriate methodologies and the impact of organisational culture and context
- Are aware of the principles, features and differences of waterfall and agile methodologies for project delivery and software development
- Employ a robust requirements engineering process;
- Investigate, model and analyse business processes;
- Write and communicate robust requirements;
- Enhance and complete requirements though an examination of business data;
- Conduct effective interviews and workshops;
- Build productive business relationships and avoid conflict.
- Apply the risk management process
Module 2: Business Change
- Appreciate the principles, processes and roles involved in business change
- Understand the importance of aligning the organisation with external and internal influences and the approaches to do this
- Understand the business analysis approach and techniques used to identify business improvements
- Design the inter-related elements required to implement successful business change
- Understand the processes that should be employed to deploy business change effectively
- Manage the classification, review and realisation of benefits
Module 3: Requirements Engineering
- Describing the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders in the requirements engineering process
- Demonstrating the application of a range of requirements elicitation techniques
- Explaining the use of requirements elicitation techniques and the relevance of them in given situations
- Documenting and prioritising user requirements for an information system
- Identifying problems with requirements and explaining how requirements documentation may be improved
- Creating a process/function model of requirements for an information system
- Interpreting a model of the data requirements for an information system
- Explaining the importance of linking project objectives and requirements to the business case
- Describing the principles of requirements management and explaining the importance of managing requirements
- Describing the use of CASE tools to support requirements engineering
- Explaining the principles of requirements validation and defining an approach to validating requirements
Module 4: Industry Trends & Gap Analysis
- Develop their awareness of technology and industry trends in the digital sector
- Gain an appreciation of how technology trends can present opportunities to business
- Develop awareness of current business improvement and IT Solutions from industry
- Understand the purpose and activities of the gap analysis process
- Understand how to document current business situations
- Be able to develop models of future state situations
- Identify key differences between current and future states
- Identify actions required to move from current to future state.
- Understand the importance of stakeholder engagement throughout the gap analysis process
Module 5: Using Business Process Models
- Develop their awareness of process modelling techniques, notation and software tools
- Be introduced to BPMN and UML modelling languages
- Understand how to elicit process information from stakeholders
- Develop awareness of how process models can be used to identify opportunity for improvement
- Produce models of a redesigned business process
- Perform business process analysis and improvement
- Understand the importance of stakeholder engagement in modelling business processes
Module 6: Business Data
- Understand the value of data to an organisation, and how data needs are considered in business improvement
- Understand business data needs
- Gain an appreciation of how to document and present data models
- Develop simple data models using relevant techniques, standards, notation and software tools
- Create data models to illustrate how data is represented within a business system
This module will be taught as an online learning task.
Module 7: Testing
- Understand the purpose and value of quality assurance techniques
- Understand the phases of testing an IT system
- Understand the role of a business analyst within the test lifecycle
- Understand The role of the business analyst in facilitating business acceptance of changes
- Develop and assurance of test plans and test scripts
- Discovering the nature and process of UAT
- Developing a suitable UAT for a compiled solution
- Define acceptance criteria for business and system changes, and support business acceptance

Frequently asked questions
How do apprenticeships work?
You’ll spend most of the time working (80% in fact). You’ll complete work projects – doing all the things you’re learning, right away on the job. The rest of the time, you’ll be learning. In lots of different ways.
You can take your career and knowledge progression as far as you want to go with our apprenticeships – even up to gaining a Master's degree.
Who can do an apprenticeship?
For most apprenticeships, you need to be aged 16 and over, be eligible to live and work in the UK and have three to five GCSEs.
Maths and English are important skills for any career, so you’ll need to have them under your belt. Here’s where it gets a bit technical. You’ll need to (at least) have Functional Skills qualifications at Level 2 in Maths and English. Don’t worry, we’ll check your qualifications for you when you apply and explain.
But, even if you don’t have them yet – all is not lost. You can complete them during your QA apprenticeship.
