Overview

The AppSense Professional course provides the necessary foundation to implement user virtualization solutions using the AppSense Management Suite. Through a combination of formal lecture and hands-on exercises, students will learn how to install, configure and administer the four components of the AppSense Management Suite. This course also contains some subject matter to help prepare candidates for the AppSense Certified Professional exam (APP-101).

Prerequisites

  • Performing administrative tasks associated with Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP i.e. manage user accounts, profiles, security groups
  • Familiarity with active directory, including group policy objects, sites, and group/user accounts, and familiarity with the fundamentals of Microsoft SQL Server administration
  • A demonstrated understanding of Windows troubleshooting techniques and tools such as task manager, performance monitor, event viewer, etc.

Delegates will learn how to

  • Discuss the purpose and functionality of AppSense Management Center, AppSense Environment Manager, AppSense Application Manager and AppSense Performance Manager
  • Diagram the architecture and communication between the components that make up the AppSense Management Suite
  • Perform an enterprise installation of the AppSense Management Suite
  • Setup and configure the management server, personalization server, and central statistics server
  • Describe the purpose and functionality of the AppSense Management Center components
  • Manage endpoints by creating, configuring and managing deployment groups, deploying packages, configuring event notifications and configuring alerts
  • Discuss the role and use of triggers, conditions and actions in creating an AppSense Environment Manager policy configuration
  • Describe policy vs. personalization
  • Create, configure and deploy an environment policy configuration
  • Describe how AppSense Environment Manager enables and manages user personalization
  • Enable, configure and test user personalization
  • Perform personalization analysis and a manual archive and rollback of an application’s personalization settings
  • Configure application access control rules
  • Deploy and test application access control configurations
  • Describe the four different methods of managing user rights
  • Configure and test self-elevation
  • Configure and test application network access control
  • Utilize AppSense Performance Manager to ensure critical applications receive the necessary system resources
  • Configure a statistics strategy and view statistics

Course Outline

Module 1: Introducing the AppSense User Virtualization Platform
Topics include:

  • Identifying the components of the AppSense Management Suite
  • Describing the purpose and functionality of the AppSense Management Center, AppSense Environment Manger, AppSense Application Manager and AppSense Performance Manager
  • Diagraming the architecture and communication between the components that make up each of the applications

Module 2: Core installation
Topics include:

  • Differentiating between stand-alone and enterprise installations
  • Locating the system requirements and pre-requisites for installing the AppSense Management Suite
  • Performing an enterprise installation of the AppSense Management Suite
  • Setting up and configuring the management, personalization and central statistic servers

Module 3: AppSense Management Center
Topics include:

  • Describing the purpose and functionality of the AppSense Management Center components
  • Navigating the management console
  • Creating and configuring a deployment group, including: Installing the client communications agent on managed computers; Installing packages and validating the correct package version has been installed on the endpoints
  • Setup security, configure an alert rule, and verify licensing

Module 4: AppSense Environment Manager – Policy
Topics include:

  • Policy vs. personalization
  • Navigating the AppSense Environment Manager console
  • Defining the role of triggers, conditions and actions
  • Identifying built in conditions and actions and describing how nodes are used to structure the timing of conditions and actions
  • Create, configure and deploy an AppSense Environment Manager policy configuration

Module 5: AppSense Environment Manager – Personalization
Topics include:

  • Define user personalization and describe how AppSense Environment Manager enables and manages user personalization
  • Enable, configure and test user personalization

Module 6: AppSense Environment Manager – Archive and analysis
Topics include:

  • Performing a personalization analysis and interpreting output from the analysis report
  • Identify actions and commands that can be run from within the personalization analyzer
  • Edit registry settings and perform a manual archive and rollback of an application’s personal settings

Module 7: AppSense Application Manager – Application access control
Topics include:

  • Describe the different security methods
  • Navigate the AppSense Application Manager console
  • Test the “out of the box” configuration
  • Create, deploy and test application access control configurations

Module 8: AppSense Application Manager – Application network access control and user rights management
Topics include:

  • Benefits of user rights management
  • Four methods of managing user rights
  • Configure and test self-elevation
  • Configure and test application network access control
  • Run the rules analyzer and interpret its output

Module 9: AppSense Performance Manager
Topics include:

  • Describe the purpose and functionality of AppSense Performance Manager components
  • Ensure quality of service for critical business applications by: Managing CPU resources; Managing memory resources; Managing disk resources; Managing licensing issues; Auditing system resource issues
