Across all sectors and organisations investment is being scrutinised very carefully – and ruthless prioritisation of spend applied. So the rise in interest in portfolio management is unsurprising.

At our recent executive briefings with Stephen Jenner, we asked attendees what their biggest challenge was when considering portfolio management. So how do you solve this challenge, what is the strategic benefit of portfolio management, and how can you apply all this to your organisation?

If you're involved the selection and delivery of business change initiatives then we're certain you could benefit from a clear understanding of portfolio management. From an organisational point of view, effective Portfolio management will provide a number of tangible benefits, as identified by Stephen Jenner:

Improved strategic alignment -more of the 'right' projects are undertaken
Removal of redundant and duplicate projects
More effective implementation of projects and programs via management of the project pipeline, dependencies and constraints
More efficient utilisation of scarce resources including skilled project managers
Greater benefits realisation
Improved accountability and corporate governance

If you're going to make a commitment to effective project portfolio management, here are just a few things you will need consider:

Senior management commitment
Evidence-based methods for project and programme selection
Awareness of cognitive bias when selecting project and programmes
A system for independent review
A portfolio-level support function (e.g. a P3O)

One way to introduce this to your organisation is to consider accredited training in Management of Portfolios (MoP™). The MoP guidance provides advice and examples of how to apply principles, practices, and techniques that together enable the most effective balance of organisational change and business as usual.
