One of the most popular questions in a UNIX class is: why doesn’t UNIX store file creation time? Well, in ext4 it does . The ext4 file system has now been available for a while, but so far Ubuntu is the only distribution installing it by default.

MBR recovery

Main disk in a PC starts with the Master Boot Record, a 512-bytes block storing the boot loader, the disk partition table and the “magic number” (AA55). Without a good MBR, system will not boot…For that reason, the ability to recover the MBR is very important, especially if the activities relating to disk partitioning or dual-boot scenarios are experimented with.

Unix world has been through quite a few compression tools. The original is compress . It is now only provided for compatibility, if at all. It’s been succeeded by procession of ever faster and more effective compression tools, such as zip, gzip, bzip2, then lzip and now xz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xz).
