John Day has enjoyed over 24 years delivering IT training courses with 15 years at QA. As a Senior Business Applications Consultant, John has delivered training courses for a wide range of Office Applications with focus on the skill-based products such as Microsoft Project and Access, and programming with Visual Basic for Applications as well as a number of web languages. Now John enjoys the role of Business Applications SharePoint Principal Technologist where he leads the SharePoint team and provides consultancy and development solutions for businesses using these technologies for a large number of QA customers as well as internal solutions. For the past five years, John has been a senior member of the SharePoint courseware development team, drawing on his experience administrating and developing SharePoint site solutions and using this to author the majority of our end-user SharePoint training courses.

In a previous post I mentioned that we had scheduled Seminars to be delivered at our three QA centres in Scotland. The success of these seminars may well lead to the seminar continuing all our other centres.

In a previous post I mentioned that we had scheduled Seminars to be delivered at our three QA centres in Scotland. The success of these seminars may well lead to the seminar continuing all our other centres.

In July Jane Atkinson-Weller (Head of Business Applications training) and myself delivered a 2 hour internal-seminar to give our account managers an insight to SharePoint. Gillian Reid of the Scotland sales team saw the potential in delivering a similar style in Scotland to our customers to raise a "SharePoint awareness" in terms of Business Applications training.

The strategy for this seminar was "eye-candy". I wanted to "Show off" to business seniors and learning and development personnel in businesses what SharePoint can do impressively and without the need for technical backgrounds or programmers. From that we can then give insight into how flexible SharePoint is to adapt to business needs with the help of programmers and developers make SharePoint a set of powerful business tools. The whole goal from this is to highlight the fact we can provide customised training to suit the way you want SharePoint to work for you and meet your governance plans. That was also another key point, to raise "governance awareness" and give an insight into the fact that customised training should be based on the business needs which includes what policies and procedures they have in place that SharePoint will be customised around.

The seminar consisted of two sessions per day which were 2 hours in length. It was planned to be one day in each centre starting with Glasgow, Edinburgh and finally off to Aberdeen. Due to demand Aberdeen was extended to two days.

The response from the seminars was very positive despite the fact we had one or two technical people attending the Edinburgh sessions and not realising it was aimed at Information workers. It has only been two weeks since the Seminar deliveries and we have already seen an increase in demand for SharePoint courses as a result.

Due to the success of this seminar we are looking to extend the roadshow to cover all of the remaining QA Centres in England to include North and North East, The Midlands, South East and the South West. The seminar will retain its focus on showing the audience what SharePoint is, and how it can be used in any business to help information workers - "work smarter".
