The video you are about to see was published by the European Commission as part of a campaign designed to attract more women to a career in science. The commission said that the video had to “speak their language to get their attention” and that it was intended to be “fun, catchy” and strike a chord with young people.

In my previous blog Where Have All The Good WOMEN Gone, I raised the issue that women are seemingly becoming less attracted to working in the Science, Engineering and Technology space and that something needed to be done to change this.

This was most emphatically NOT what I had in mind.

We need strong role models to inspire young women, education around why it's a good career choice, not have it reduced to a Barbie in a labcoat with a message of "ooooh look how glamourous it is."

This kind of gender-biased approach is precisely the kind of attitude which fosters the seggregation we want to avoid, creating a stereotype of "women's" and "men's" jobs when we need jobs to be equally attractive to both.

And not because it's glamorous or rugged, but because innovation drives the world, changes the world and developing skills and qualifications in the SET space open up a strong career track with limitless opportunities.
